Title : Screw It, Let's Do It: Lessons in Life (Quick Reads)
Author : Sir Richard Branson
Rating : 1 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Screw it, let's not bother...
While the contents of this book are all well and good (it's basically a VERY thin fillet of the branson autobiography) I have to award it only one star for the following reasons:
1. This book is so short the publishers have had to print it in granny size 20 point linotype.
2. With a cover price of £2.99 that's nearly a penny for every two words.
3.While the book is clearly trying to sell itself as one of those crossover popular psycholgy/ business books of aphorisms, it isn't. It's a short series of vignettes.
Don't waste your hard earned money on this shoddy cash in little volume. Get the full biog instead.

Title : Screw It, Let's Do It: Lessons in Life (Quick Reads)
Author : Sir Richard Branson
Rating : 2 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Quick read, shallow story ....
I'm reviewing this book, not the man. The book is so concise (big print, designed for emergent readers) that even though you get through it cover to cover in just two hours there is very little satisfaction to be had.
It's a collection of snippets. Those who composed it do not even do us the service of keeping it to a decent chronological flow. It leaps back and forth chapter by chapter.
In compressing so many deeds into so few pages, I was left with the perception that Richard Branson was very smug; I did this good deed, then I had this great adventure, then I set up and sold a big business for a large profit, then I brokered a hostage-saving deal with Saddam Hussein, then I persuaded Elton John to sing at Princess Diana's funeral. I am sure that he is not the smug man that this book might lead you to believe. I would guess that you'd be better served (and learn more) by reading a fuller story.
PS I had to laugh at the Scottish reviewer of this book who worked out that he'd gotten just two words to the penny! Laugh out Loud!!

Title : Rules of the Red Rubber Ball

Deceptively simple and easy to read in an hour or so, its meaning and power go very deep. Title : The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal Change
Author : Stephen R Covey
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Well read Bestseller
After the Bible, no other single book has shaped my leadership mentality and disciplines like this one by Covey. I first read it in 1991 and his recommendations brought it all together for me. Success in effective living begins with Private Victory (Be Proactive, Begin with the end in mind, Put first things first) then moves on to Public Victory (Think Win-Win, Seek first to understand...then to be understood, Synergize), and finally back into personal effectiveness by Sharpening the Saw. These concepts are essential to weeding through all the fluff of the information age. This book also contains fantastic practical advice on living out one's priorities ("Exercise integrity at the moment of choice") and teamwork ("Defend those who are absent").

Title : Motivational Interviewing: Preparing People for Change
Author : William R. Miller
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : ...care ... communicate...
I searched the internet for months - looking for books or any kind of teaching aids - that could shine just a tiny ray of light - onto communicating effectively with people who have any kind of addiction problems.
This book is a masterpiece.
With a basis in the teaching and counselling methods of Carl Rogers, taken further into the specialist field of addiction - It describes in such careful detail the most gentle, most understanding - most effective ways to communicate....so that you will learn the most helpful ways - to inspire change, how to discover, and be supportive of the addicted person's smallest inclination to change.
It is not a book about fixing things - controlling anyone - or changing minds ... but about how best to support, encourage and inspire someone you care about - to develop their own decisions.. that may be life saving.
It is a book suitable for professional counsellors - but it is written in a lucid style which is equally comprehensible to any one with an interest in the topic.
Carefully chosen words of encouragement and support - given at the right time - to people whose own insecurity and self doubt may make them aggressive and defensive against all approaches that seem to be attempts to change or guide them.....
...may seem to you, as they did to me - to be impossible to find.
Read this book. It will help you to find them.
