Title : Motivational Interviewing: Preparing People for Change
Author : William R. Miller
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : ...care ... communicate...

I searched the internet for months - looking for books or any kind of teaching aids - that could shine just a tiny ray of light - onto communicating effectively with people who have any kind of addiction problems.

This book is a masterpiece.
With a basis in the teaching and counselling methods of Carl Rogers, taken further into the specialist field of addiction - It describes in such careful detail the most gentle, most understanding - most effective ways to communicate....so that you will learn the most helpful ways - to inspire change, how to discover, and be supportive of the addicted person's smallest inclination to change.

It is not a book about fixing things - controlling anyone - or changing minds ... but about how best to support, encourage and inspire someone you care about - to develop their own decisions.. that may be life saving.

It is a book suitable for professional counsellors - but it is written in a lucid style which is equally comprehensible to any one with an interest in the topic.

Carefully chosen words of encouragement and support - given at the right time - to people whose own insecurity and self doubt may make them aggressive and defensive against all approaches that seem to be attempts to change or guide them.....
...may seem to you, as they did to me - to be impossible to find.

Read this book. It will help you to find them.

Fiona's fabulous book has confirmed in my mind that I want to become a life-coach. Her style is easy to read, no-nonsense and very persuasive. She has inspired me to change my attitude on many topics and since I have read the book I have become 100% happier with myself and my life. She makes you realise that,if you're unhappy, the person that is responsible for changing that is YOU. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to do something different in their lives but can't quite muster up the courage to achieve it. Title : The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal Change
Author : Stephen R. Covey
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : filled with important information

Not that I'm an expert in the subject, but I'm guessing that this isn't your typical success book. In many ways it's a general purpose psychology book, dealing with such things as motivation, organizational skills, and how to deal with stress. It's chock full of seemingly unique information, and interesting quotes and tidbits. For example, it states "Management is efficiency in climbing the ladder of success; leadership determines whether the ladder is leaning against the right wall." The book isn't boring or repetitive, and is written in a pleasing, conversational manner. Everyone should give this a read, not just those interested in business success. Author of Adjust Your Brain: A Practical Theory for Maximizing Mental Health.

Some further reading that I'm sure you will find of interest is a recently released new age novel, a psychological/spiritual adventure about compassion, life transformation, and self-empowerment "Nexus: A Neo Novel" and "The Saint, the Surfer, and the CEO" - remarkable stories about life transformation.

Title : The Life You Were Born to Live: Finding Your Life Purpose
Author : Dan Millman
Rating : 4 Stars out of 5.
Summary : No denying the accuracy

I learnt the basics of numerology some years ago and whilst not understanding why it worked have used it as a tool of insight. When I picked up this book and bought it I had no idea until I got it home that there was any association with birhtdates at all. This book has served to instil even more faith in the significance of birthdates in life lessons. Those who cannot accept what they read may find that the issue is something they've either moved past through growth or are yet to accept about themselves. The book is a tool I will continue to use. Title : Born to Win: Transactional Analysis with Gestalt Experiments
Author : Muriel James
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Possibly the best Self-Help book ever!

Transactional Analysis and Gestalt may seem old hat these days but the basic priniples have stood the test of time. This book formed the basis of my own study of TA in the seventies and also enabled me to beat a long standing history of recurrent depression and stress-related illness. I now teach TA to medical professionals and, 30 years on, this is still the best book available! Last updated and revised on its 25th birthday in 1996 this really is a "must buy" for anyone interested in digging through the "psychobabble" to the core of what makes people, including you, tick.

Title : Positive Thinking, Positive Action: Essential Steps to Achieve Your Potential (Personal Development)
Author : Douglas Miller
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Positive Thinking

In today's fast moving world it is very easy to become demotivated and thereby negative for those of us who are not natuaral optimists. The trouble with demotivation and negativity is that we bring it home from our workplace and this enhances the our downward spiral.

Doug Miller's book helps to reverse this processby teaching us the benefits of positivity. We all know people who appear postive and with such positivity goes success. Not necessarily always in their work but in their lives. The book draws upon the experiences of self motivated people whose lives have taken off because of their attitude and their postive approach to everything they do.

There are plenty of techniques with the 192 pages to help the most stubborn pessimist. An ideal present for a disaffected offspring going through an identity crisis.
